Insurance Requirements
All participants are required to have both travel and equipment insurance for the duration of the tour. This ensures protection for yourself and your gear, giving peace of mind while in the field. Insurance is the sole responsibility of each participant and must be arranged prior to departure, as Focused On Wildlife does not provide coverage.
Focused On Wildlife, however, is fully covered under the UK Package Travel Regulations against financial failure, giving participants reassurance that all bookings are financially protected.

Q&A: Your Questions Answered
Q: How close do we get to the musk oxen?
A: The musk oxen are wild animals living in their natural mountain environment, so encounters take place at varying distances. A telephoto lens in the 300–600mm range is recommended, allowing you to create both intimate portraits and wider environmental images. The animals and their natural behaviour are to be respected at all times.
Q: How physically demanding is the expedition?
A: You should be comfortable hiking for around one to two hours through snowy and uneven mountain terrain while carrying your camera equipment. The pace is managed carefully, but a moderate level of fitness is important for getting to the areas where the musk oxen are found.
Q: What other wildlife might we see?
A: Musk oxen are the main subject, but the mountains can also produce mountain hares, rock ptarmigan, ravens, reindeer and potentially golden eagles. The surrounding winter landscapes are also a major part of the photographic experience.
Q: Will we spend the whole time outdoors?
A: The days are focused on mountain photography, but you’ll return to comfortable cabins each evening. The cabins provide warm accommodation, proper beds, communal areas and facilities where you can relax, review images and prepare for the following day.
Mosk Ox In Autumn
Musk oxen are Ice Age survivors, magnificent prehistoric-looking animals reintroduced to Norway’s mountains where they now thrive in their ancestral alpine territory, and this winter expedition is structured around helping you create powerful images of both these creatures and the dramatic landscape around them. Snow-covered peaks, wide tundra plateaus and sweeping valleys form a cinematic backdrop, while low-angled northern light produces long golden hours across snow and ice.

You will learn to work with winter mountain light, capture natural behaviour, compose images where vast landscapes and massive subjects work together, and think in visual narratives rather than isolated frames. Each day involves one to two hours of hiking through snowy terrain to reach musk ox territory, rewarded with close encounters against some of Europe’s most spectacular alpine scenery.
Beyond the musk oxen, you may photograph mountain hares in winter camouflage, rock ptarmigan, ravens in complex aerial behaviour, reindeer and, with favourable conditions, golden eagles, as well as frozen waterfalls, glacial valleys and windswept tundra under fast-changing skies. On clear nights there is the chance to photograph the aurora borealis, with guidance to help you capture it against the mountains.

You stay in comfortable mountain cabins with equipped kitchens, a lounge for image review, private bathrooms and proper beds, returning each evening to warmth and home-cooked meals, with no technical mountaineering required. Limited to six participants, the group enjoys personal guidance, flexible pacing and the freedom to work the best positions without pressure. A moderate level of fitness is needed for hiking on uneven, snowy ground with camera gear, and temperatures typically range from minus ten to zero degrees Celsius, so proper winter clothing and a 300mm lens or longer, ideally 400 to 600mm, are essential.
Guides have the final say on routes and timings for safety, and a cold-weather preparation guide and packing list are provided. The group meets at Oslo Airport, Gardermoen, and guests hire or use their own transport during the trip. All levels are welcome, with beginners receiving strong foundations and experienced photographers advanced creative and technical support, and you will return with a strong mountain wildlife portfolio, confidence in snow exposure and cold-weather technique, and lasting memories of pristine winter wilderness, close encounters and relaxed cabin evenings.
