Experience the raw energy and spectacle of the deer rut, as dominant stags clash and display in the crisp autumn air. Guided by an expert photographer, you’ll learn how to capture the intensity, behaviour, and atmosphere of this remarkable wildlife event. From understanding light and composition to anticipating key moments, this workshop offers the skills and opportunities to create powerful, evocative images of one of nature’s most dramatic seasonal displays.
In The Field: Approximately 6 hours
What to Expect
We’ll meet at our agreed location around 6:30am — yes, it’s early, but sunrise offers the most spectacular light for deer rut photography. After a quick safety and logistics briefing, we’ll head towards the areas where we can hear stags rutting.
The main photography session runs until 9:30–10:00am, giving you plenty of time to capture dramatic behaviour, misty landscapes, and those golden rays. Around mid-morning, we’ll take a break for coffee or tea and a quick snack.
At this point, you’re welcome to head off, but I’ll remain until around 12:30pm for extra shooting or informal discussions on wildlife photography. While this additional time isn’t part of the structured workshop, you’re free to join and see what unfolds.
Included
Hosted at a prime wildlife location near London or Surrey
Camera skills – Understand your settings and when to use them
Lens skills – Learn what lens works best for different scenarios
Fieldcraft – Read animal behaviour and use natural light to your advantage
Recommended Kit
Telephoto lens (300mm+)
Monopod (tripods can be cumbersome in the field)
Weather-appropriate clothing
Clothes you don’t mind getting muddy
Any personal medication
Snacks and drinks
