Experience the charm and character of puffins on Skomer Island, as these colourful seabirds come and go from their burrows, return with beakfuls of sand eels, and interact with one another. Guided by an expert photographer, you’ll learn how to capture their behaviour, character and surroundings. From understanding light and composition to anticipating movement and capturing birds in flight, this workshop offers the skills and opportunities to create memorable wildlife images of one of the UK’s most loved seabirds.

In The Field: Approximately 6 hours

What to Expect

We’ll meet at our agreed Martin's Haven Carpark before travelling to Skomer Island, where we’ll spend our allocated slot photographing puffins and other seabirds. Once on the island, we’ll explore the best areas for photography, capturing puffins in action, returning with sand eels and interacting around their burrows. Throughout the day, I’ll offer practical guidance on camera settings, light, composition and bird behaviour. We’ll take breaks as needed, making the most of the opportunities the island and its wildlife provide.

Included

  • Landing - Your landing and ferry "tickets" for the allocated time on the island

  • Camera skills – Understand your settings and when to use them

  • Lens skills – Learn what lens works best for different scenarios

  • Fieldcraft – Read animal behaviour and use natural light to your advantage

Recommended Kit

  • Telephoto lens of 300mm+ (for most images)

  • Wide Angle lens (for close-up images)

  • Weather-appropriate clothing

  • Clothes you don’t mind getting muddy

  • Any personal medication

  • Snacks and drinks (meals are NOT provided or available for purchase on the island)
