Summary
A photo safari in the Timbavati Private Nature Reserve offers an unforgettable opportunity to experience and capture Africa’s wilderness at its most authentic. Bordering the Kruger National Park with no fences between, Timbavati provides access to the Big Five and an incredible variety of wildlife roaming freely. Guided by expert rangers and trackers, you’ll enjoy unhurried game drives designed to maximise photographic opportunities, from golden sunrises over the savanna to intimate close-ups of elephants, lions, and the reserve’s rare white lions. With stunning landscapes, abundant wildlife, and perfect light, Timbavati is a dream setting for both amateur and professional photographers.
Basic Itinerary
Day 1 - Depart en-route to South Africa
We depart on an overnight flight to Johannesburg, and then connect to Hoedspruit, South Africa (flights are excluded but we can help to ensure you are on an appropriate flight). There is also an option to transfer via road (about 4-5 hours from Johannesburg to Hoedspruit) but please discuss this with the tour organiser first.
From Europe:
Direct flights from major European hubs such as London, Frankfurt, Amsterdam, and Paris typically take 9 to 12 hours to reach Johannesburg. Several airlines offer overnight flights, allowing you to rest and arrive ready to begin your adventure. The internal flight to Hoedspruit, from Johannesburg, takes approximately 1 hour.
From North America:
Flights from the East Coast (e.g., New York or Washington, D.C.) to Johannesburg usually involve a short layover in Europe or the Middle East, with total travel time averaging 15 to 20 hours. From the West Coast (e.g., Los Angeles or San Francisco), expect a journey of around 24 hours, depending on connections.

Day 2 - Arrive and Transfer
We arrive at OR Tambo International (South Africa) and transfer via plane to Hoedspruit (South Africa). We will then transfer by road to the lodge (approximately 2 hours), arriving at the lodge just after lunch time. We settle in and prepare for an afternoon safari.
After a 3-4 hour drive and having enjoyed our first sunset, we return to camp for dinner.
Accommodation: Umlani Bushcamp, Timbavati

Days 3 - 7: Full Day Exploring the Timbavati Private Game Reserve.
Over the next 5 nights, we will have a full day to explore and photograph this magnificent park. The wildlife opportunities are excellent and the guides and trackers are experts at what they do. Here's what a typical day look like:
Early wake-up call (around 4:30 - 5:00)
Morning game drive (3-4 hours), break for bush coffee.
Return for brunch.
Relax during the heat of the day.
Afternoon game drive, break for sundowners.
Return for dinner.
Accommodation: Umlani Bushcamp, Timbavati

Day 8 - Final Game Drive and Transfer to Airport
This will be our final drive at the lodge, a morning safari. After the drive we return back for one final brunch and prepare our bags for departure. A transfer will take us back to Hoedspruit airport and after a short flight, we will be at OR Tambo International, ready to leave on a night flight back to your country of origin.

Day 9 - Arrive back at our origin
OR NOT! - Why not extend your trip?
If you’d like to carry on exploring after your safari, we’d be delighted to help. This is South Africa—a world in one country—and being South African myself, I’m uniquely placed to advise you on everything this wonderful destination has to offer. Whether it’s a few days on the beach, a city stopover, or another adventure, we’ll do our best to arrange smooth connections to your next destination.

IMPORTANT
Travel Insurance
Travel insurance is a requirement for joining any wildlife photography tour or workshop arranged by Focused On Wildlife (or our partners). Please ensure you have a comprehensive policy in place before departure. We recommend choosing a reputable provider you already trust, with cover that includes medical emergencies, cancellations, and delays.
Equipment Insurance
Your camera gear is one of your most valuable investments. On our tours, you may be travelling into remote and sometimes unpredictable environments, where accidents, loss, or theft can occur. It’s essential that your photographic equipment is properly insured before you travel.
Wildlife photography often involves capturing once-in-a-lifetime moments. By insuring your kit, you’ll have peace of mind that, should the unexpected happen, you’re protected financially. This allows you to stay focused on what really matters: immersing yourself in nature and bringing home unforgettable images.
